I recently heard from a former colleague who's considering applying for a new position at a former employer. He left that company several years ago for greener grass and has since found that perhaps staying put would have been the wiser course. The former employer is hiring, and he wanted some advice on how to best earn a chance to go back home.

I think this desire to go back home is something that will more and more be a goal given much of what's being written about the millennial generation and their wanderlust. A number of my students have validated what executives have told me: young people are leaving employers simply to try something else. Micromanagers, tyrants, and indifferent bosses all create uncomfortable situations for their subordinates. Now, during the recession when people feel more "stuck" than ever in their current job, a bad boss is even more frustrating. There is no end in sight to the "bad boss" because – at least for a time – quitting doesn't seem to be an option.

There is a lot to be said on the topic of bad bosses, but for this podcast I'll focus on one important consideration for approaching your career game: that's the distinction between what we call your short game and your long game.

The terms are borrowed from golf, where the difference between short and long game is primarily the distance involved in the shot. In golf, great players develop strong abilities at both; lesser players are usually so because they excel at one or the other.

The same is true in your career game: to win you have to be strong at both the short and long game.

In careers, the difference between the two isn't distance: it's time. Your short game has to do with the way you manage....

The most talked about career move of the week belongs to late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien. TBS announced that O'Brien would debut his show on its network this fall, after its baseball post-season coverage concludes. Many were surprised by what they view as an odd move– as O'Brien himself noted: "In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable.
People are quick to understand that mentors matter, but fewer understand how to really get the most out of one. Our contention is that just as with any other strategic resource, a key predictor of what will make one executive more successful than the next is the ability to leverage a mentor. It isn't enough to collect mentors – you must be purposeful in how you select and deploy them! Your ability to do this will have a dramatic impact on the trajectory of your career.
